2G Spectrum scam Summery




What is Spectrum?
Spectrum is specific range of electromagnetic wavelength, which is used in radio, TV broadcasting, mobile communications and internet facility. For AM 540 KHz, Cable TV 145-860MHz, 3G 2100MHz, broadband 2300MHz spectrums are used.
What is 2G?
2G is short for second-generation wireless telephone technology.
What is 2G scam?
      It means issuing of 2G licenses to private telecom companies at low prices. The companies paid fewer amounts to the government which hits the profit and revenue of the government. It was done by bribing the Department of Telecom (DOT).
      2G licenses issued to private telecom players at throwaway prices in 2008.
      Spectrum scam has cost loss to the government Rs. 1.76 Lakh crore.
      Rules and procedures are not followed b while issuing licenses.
Who caused it?
      Andimuthu Raja caused the 2G scam in 2008 at when he was a Telecom Minister of India.
      A. Raja caused the loss of $40 billion to the Government by selling the Licenses of network to the private players without following any rules and regulations.
How Telecom Licenses become cheaper?
      Rules changed after the game had begun.
      Cut-off date for applications advanced by a week.
      Licenses issued on a first-come-first-served basis.
      No proper auction process followed, no bids invited.
      Raja ignored advice of TRAI, Law Ministry, and Finance Ministry.
      TRAI had recommended auctioning of spectrum at market rates.
